is operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for the American
ocean research community. It is one of the most sophisticated research
vessels afloat, equipped with precision navigation, bottom mapping, and
satellite communications systems. |

"Coming through the Straits yesterday evening was very
picturesque - purplish hills all around, some of the higher peaks with snow
that turned all orange and pink when the sun went down. After dinner I came
out on deck for a few minutes before going to bed, and there was a full moon
blazing a trail of white light across the water."
