Naomi has been invited by NOAA's Office
of Ocean Exploration to participate in
a research cruise to the Gulf of Alaska
seamounts on the Research Vessel Atlantis.
From July 30 until August 23, the Atlantis
will be visiting the seamounts (underwater
extinct volcanoes) and exploring them
using the submersible Alvin. The research
focus of the cruise is two-fold: the geology
of the seamounts, and the biology of the
deep-sea corals that flourish at these
diversity hotspots. Naomi's particular
area of interest is the composition of
the bacterial communities associated with
